Lymphatic Drainage Brandon Tampa

What Is Lymphatic Drainage Massage? Manual lymphatic Drainage (MLD) opens up the lymphatic channels and encourages the fluid flow through its pathways; this aids elimination of excess fluid from the swollen tissues hence relieving the pain and speeding up the healing.

Lymphatic drainage massage is a specific pattern of very slow, light and rhythmic stretching of the skin in circular movements to stimulate the lymphatic vessels and nodes. The movement of the skin accelerates the re-absorption of tissue fluid into the lymphatic: channels, increasing the effectiveness of excess lymph fluid filtered through the lymph nodes. Through consistent MLD, alternate pathways are created by re routing stagnant fluid to healthy lymphatic vessels and nodes MLD also stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, and therefore, causes people to feel relaxed and often fall asleep during treatment.

The Treatment

Each session lasts for 45 minutes-1 hour. The treatment can start as soon as the next day. It is advisable to have an intensive course of 8-10 sessions. This means either every other day or everyday treatments.

Lymphatic massage, also called lymphatic drainage or manual lymph drainage, is a technique developed in Germany for treatment of an accumulation of fluid that can occur after lymph nodes are removed during surgery, such as a mastectomy for breast cancer.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage & Cosmetic Surgery

Patients whom have recently undergone surgery can also benefit from lymphatic drainage massage. Face and eye Iifts, breast augmentation, body sculpturing, neck, abdominal and thigh liposuction are becoming more and more sought surgeries. Swelling, bruising and pain are very common signs after the operation. Sometimes the healing period takes so long that the patients become home bound for weeks. View an actual case study for additional information.

Some surgeries that could benefit from MLD massage:

  • tummy tuck
  • liposuction
  • breast augmentation
  • breast reduction
  • medical mastectomy
  • knee replacement
  • hip replacement
  • shoulder replacement
  • joint repair/replacement
  • It removes waste and eradication of cellular debris
  • Transportation of healthy nutrients can be enhanced ten times to facilitate detoxification, edema and bruising reduction through maximization of the immune system.
  • It reduces post operative recovery from 9-12 months to 6 weeks-3 months.

About

Manual Lymphatic Drainage MLD Massage

Pre Operation MLD

Doctors and aestheticians report that pre operative MLD creates very favorable healing results by relaxing the nervous system and preparing the inner milieu (environment).

Post Operative MLD

During an operation, blood vessels are cut and lymph vessels can be damaged. Red blood cells and large molecular material must be drained via the initial lymph vessels (under the skin) as obligatory lymph load. If the trauma causes severe pain the lymph vessels contract spastically, hindering the drainage of the lymph fluid. If no treatment follows, a hematoma will be organized, in other words, a bruise-connective tissue cells establish themselves and form numerous collagen fibers (granulation tissue). We are all familiar with the hardened or gelatin remnants of a bruise.

If MLD begins promptly, the bruise can be drained along the lymph vessels before it becomes organized. MLD alleviates pain, so that drainage strokes can be carried out, not just at the edge of the bruise, but over it entirely.

New scars cease itching; the deep reddening becomes light and scar tensions loosen. Before your operation it is beneficial having treatments and to discuss any areas of concern with your therapist.

After your operation a few treatments will reduce swelling, pain and bruising, helping you to speed up the healing process.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage FAQs

What is MLD exactly? Many are unfamiliar with this form of massage and it is one of my favorite types of specialty work, especially for clients who just had surgery.

As implied by its name, manual lymph drainage massage works in conjunction with the lymphatic system. This is a system of vessels that remove proteins, excess fluid, viruses, and bacteria. Manual lymphatic drainage massage aids in the waste removal at a cellular level and helps with bringing nutrients and oxygen to the cells. Do you see how this treatment is so valuable for someone who has just had an operation? Between the anesthesia, swelling, bruising, and tightness, this massage will encourage the lymphatic fluid to move 8 to 10 times faster than it would on its own.

Before working on a client who is receiving MLD, I am often asked if it is painful. In short, the answer is no. When people hear the word massage, they often think of deep tissue work. Most of my lymphatic clients have just had cosmetic surgery. The last thing they imagine that they want to have is a massage on their swollen, sensitive, and often bruised bodies. So, if you are reading this and planning on having the surgery, I have good news… You will love it! It’s pain-free and offers tremendous healing benefits and believe it or not, is actually quite relaxing.

Since the majority of the lymph system sits right below the skin, the pressure used in the special massage technique is extremely light.  With light pressure in a rhythmic, circular motion, I can stimulate the lymphatic system to work more efficiently and help move the fluids back to the lymph nodes to be cleared from the body through normal elimination. This results in reduced swelling. Toxins are released, in the body has an opportunity to heal more quickly. I love providing these massages to my post surgery clients because they see and feel a difference usually before they had even left the spa, and that makes my heart glad.

MLD – of the Head Neck, and Face

Manual Lymph Drainage Massage that is specifically focused on the head neck and face areas is often performed on cosmetic surgery patients. It is performed before and after surgeries to provide patients with a short postoperative recovery and a return to normal activity and sensation of the operated areas. It is also a treatment performed on patients that face medical conditions such as headaches, trigeminal neuralgia, Bell’s palsy, earaches, sinusitis, strokes, burns, Alzheimer, and glaucoma.

The benefits of MLD – of the Head, Neck, and Face include the following:

  • It increases vessel activity and promotes lymph flow.
